Open role
Commercial Collections Officer
About the role
As a Commercial Collections Officer you will manage a portfolio of overdue commercial accounts across professional services, recruitment and commercial credit services. You will be the voice of Sensible Collections on the phone and in writing, working with debtors and creditors to recover outstanding sums while preserving trading relationships.
This is not a high-pressure call-centre role. We take a measured, professional approach: understand the reason for non-payment, agree a realistic resolution, and document everything properly.
What you will do
- Review new instructions and supporting evidence, then agree a recovery strategy with the account director.
- Prepare and issue bespoke demand letters by post and email, tailored to the contract, jurisdiction and industry.
- Contact debtors by telephone to establish the reason for non-payment and negotiate settlement, payment plans or structured resolutions.
- Maintain accurate case notes, diaries and records on our case management system.
- Identify when a matter should be escalated to legal action, adjudication or one of our approved partner firms.
- Work to the Credit Services Association code of practice and treat financial difficulty and vulnerability with care.
What we are looking for
- Experience in commercial debt recovery, credit control or collections.
- Strong telephone manner and the judgement to negotiate without damaging client relationships.
- Good working knowledge of UK commercial contracts and late-payment legislation.
- Organised, detail-oriented and comfortable managing a varied caseload.
- Professional written English and confident with IT systems.
- Experience in professional services, recruitment or commercial credit recovery is an advantage but not essential.
What we offer
- Competitive base salary plus performance-related commission.
- Clear progression path to account director or team lead.
- Hybrid working after probation.
- Training on the Pre-Action Protocol, commercial credit perimeter checks and UK GDPR.
- A grown-up, professional culture — no aggressive tactics, no micro-management.
